Why should I believe the preachers with faith not works?

For 30 years I have been listening to Evangelical preachers preach we are saved by faith, not works lest no man boast. But the bible also clearly talks about works too!!! But heaven forbid you believe that. You will be condemned by these religious leaders. Why should I put my eternal trust in these preachers. After all, I have found that most people in authority are scoundrels; politicians, priests and even preachers! Is it so damning if I choose to make up my own mind and say we are saved by faith and works? Even if I am wrong is that okay or am I damned? I just am sick and tired of being a mindless sheep.
