What is the title of this movie?

It was an italian-themed movie about persecution of italians. There was an angry mob that came after them, hung them, shot them, and killed them. I do remeber there was an irish sherrif i believe. It was also set around the time when ellis island was open. I want to say it was set in louisiana, but i might be wrong.
