How to obtain WW 2 records?

My Grandfather was captured after the battle of St Valery in France (I think he was with the Black Watch) then was a POW in Poland for the rest of the war.....thats all I know, he has since ped away and would like to find out more, is there any official site, organizations I can contact that would hold such information and would be willing to help?
